What this care involves
Laparoscopy uses a camera inserted through small abdominal incisions to view the pelvis. It may be used for assessment or treatment of selected gynaecological conditions.
When to seek a consultation
A surgical opinion may be helpful if imaging shows an ovarian cyst or another pelvic finding, if symptoms persist, or if a clinician suggests a procedure for endometriosis or fibroids.
What an assessment may include
The surgeon reviews symptoms, imaging, previous operations and reproductive plans. Further tests or an anaesthetic review may be needed before the hospital can arrange surgery.
Options and next steps
Discuss whether observation, medicines or another procedure might be suitable. Ask about bleeding, infection, injury, recovery and the possibility that the surgical plan may need to change.
Common question
Can a consultation confirm whether I need surgery?
The consultation helps assess whether surgery is appropriate. Some cases need additional imaging, tests or a hospital evaluation before a decision.
