What a fibroid is

A fibroid is a growth of uterine muscle that is usually non-cancerous. Some people learn about one on a scan for another reason. Others have heavy periods, pelvic pressure or related symptoms.

Why size is only part of the picture

The number and location of fibroids can matter as much as size. Ask whether a finding could explain your symptoms and whether anything else should be investigated.

Which options might be discussed

Observation, symptom treatment or a procedure may be considered. Your clinician will consider bleeding, anaemia, discomfort, location of the fibroid and your plans for pregnancy.

Bring your scan and your questions

Bring the report and images if available. Ask what change would justify another review and what the treatment would aim to improve.
